Walking around Coleraine
The Train

The Coleraine Railway line was officially opened in 1888. Two trains operated daily from Hamilton. In the first 7 months of operation, 7231 people travelled on the line. The line closed on the 9th of September 1977.
My Dad died in Melbourne in September 1944. To bring him home to be buried he had to be transported in the Guards Van of the train and then transferred to the Hamilton-Coleraine train. The hearse met us at the station, Mother and I were on the train with him. It was very sad.
I remember in the 1970's when my son was 18 months old we went to the railway station. There was a goods train coming in and my son was jumping in my arms with excitement. The train pulled into the platform. The driver seeing Andrew would love a ride took him through the window and backed the train back up the track. The train then came into the station with my son blowing the whistle.
